Information About the Character Council of Central Oklahoma

The Character Council of Central Oklahoma began December 2003, with a small meeting of individuals committed to investing in the local community by promoting good character development.

Because these individuals recognized the importance of good character to the community's success, the Character Council of Central Oklahoma, was formed. The Character Council of Central Oklahoma is a not-for-profit, non-religious, and non-partisan organization.

Although the Character Council is new to the Central Oklahoma area, the concept of a community-wide character initiative is not. Character development as a community effort and focus originated through the International Association of Character Cities, an organization that was started in 1996 after a city in Louisiana noticed the benefits of the Character First! Business and Character First! Education program. As a result, they decided to incorporate the character development concept throughout the entire community.

Today there are more than 200 cities, counties, states, and jurisdictions worldwide that have officially passed a resolution declaring their commitment to community-wide character development.

The City of Oklahoma City joined this effort in September 1999, when former Mayor Kirk Humphreys lead the city council in passing a resolution to officially make Oklahoma City a "City of Character."

Desiring to create action in support of this commitment, the Character Council has established a committee for each of the seven major sectors of the community, with the goal of encouraging everyone in central Oklahoma through the message and success of good character.
